Sandy Cay Trail

Sandy Cay is a beautiful uninhabited island near Jost Van Dyke that has a short hiking trail maintained by a Jost Van Dike Preservation Society caretaker. The half-mile nature trail is in the heart of a rare Caribbean dry scrub forest. The flora and fauna on this trail were saved in 2002, after a campaign run by the Island Resources Foundation to eradicate the invasive black rat.

A hike on the Sandy Cay trail offers a unique opportunity to see all kinds of wildlife including but not limited to: bridled terns, hermit crabs, laughing gulls, ground lizards, Antillean Crested Hummingbirds and more!

Accessible by boat only, the island used to be botanical gardens funded and maintained by Laurance Rockefeller before being donated.
